PRF Microneedling: Why It's Safe for All Seasons — Including Summer

One of the most common questions we get as summer arrives in New York:
"Can I still do microneedling in the summer?"
The traditional answer was: wait until fall. With PRF microneedling, the answer is different.
At JLoo Beauty Experts in Midtown Manhattan, we perform PRF microneedling year-round — and summer is actually a great time to start, if you know what you're doing.
Here's everything you need to understand.

What Is PRF Microneedling?
PRF stands for Platelet-Rich Fibrin.
It's an advanced form of PRP (Platelet-Rich Plasma) that uses your own blood's growth factors to accelerate healing, stimulate collagen, and dramatically improve the skin's repair response.
The treatment combines two steps:
Microneedling — fine sterile needles create controlled micro-channels in the skin, triggering the body's natural collagen cascade
PRF application — your own platelet-rich fibrin (drawn before the session) is applied topically during microneedling, driving concentrated growth factors into the dermis
Together, they produce faster healing, more collagen stimulation, and visibly improved texture, tone, and firmness — results that continue developing for weeks.
It's what we call the Glass Skin Facial at JLoo — and it's one of our most requested treatments.
Why Did People Think Microneedling Wasn't Safe in Summer?
The concern is legitimate.
Standard microneedling (without PRF) creates micro-injury to the skin. During the healing window, the skin is more sun-sensitive — and in summer, you're getting more UV exposure than usual.
That combination — heightened sensitivity + increased sun — raised the risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), especially in deeper skin tones.
The traditional guidance: avoid microneedling in summer.
Why PRF Changes This Equation
PRF is not just an add-on. It fundamentally changes how your skin heals.
Here's why the summer concern is significantly reduced with PRF:
1. PRF dramatically accelerates healing.
The growth factors in your own platelet-rich fibrin compress the healing timeline. What takes 5–7 days with standard microneedling can resolve in 2–3 days with PRF. That shorter healing window = shorter sun-sensitivity window.
2. PRF reduces post-treatment inflammation.
Less inflammation means less redness, less disruption to the skin barrier, and a lower risk of triggering PIH — even in summer conditions.
3. PRF supports barrier integrity faster.
A stronger, faster-healing barrier is more resilient against UV and environmental stressors during the post-treatment period.
Combined with diligent SPF (we recommend the SkinBetter Science Tone Smart SPF 75 or SHEER SPF 56), summer PRF microneedling is safe and effective for most skin types.
Summer PRF Microneedling: What to Expect Before, During & After
Before the treatment:
Avoid retinol, AHAs, and active exfoliants for 3–5 days prior
No tanning, sunburn, or active sun exposure the week before
Come with clean, bare skin — no makeup or SPF on the day
Hydrate well in the 48 hours before your session
During the treatment:
Topical numbing cream applied for comfort (30–45 min before starting)
A small blood draw — just a few vials — to prepare your PRF
Microneedling performed across treatment areas while PRF is centrifuged
PRF applied topically and driven in during the needling passes
Total session time: approximately 60–75 minutes
After the treatment — summer-specific aftercare:
Apply medical-grade mineral SPF 30+ every single morning, no exceptions
Avoid direct sun exposure for 48 hours post-treatment
Skip vigorous outdoor exercise for 24 hours
No swimming, saunas, or steam rooms for 48 hours
Use gentle, non-active skincare for 3–5 days (Biojuve Hydrating Barrier Cream is ideal)
Hydrate consistently — it helps healing and results
How Many Sessions Do You Need?
Most clients see the best results with a series of 3 sessions, spaced 4–6 weeks apart.
Starting in June means:
Session 1: June
Session 2: July–August
Session 3: September
You'll be well into your collagen remodeling phase by fall — with noticeably improved skin texture, tone, and firmness just in time for the holiday season.
Who Is PRF Microneedling Right For?
PRF microneedling is one of the most versatile treatments we offer. Ideal for clients dealing with:
Fine lines and early skin laxity
Acne scarring and post-inflammatory marks
Uneven texture or enlarged pores
Dullness or loss of skin luminosity
General skin quality concerns — wanting "glass skin" results
It's safe for most skin tones when performed by a board-certified provider using the PRF protocol. At JLoo, every PRF microneedling session is performed or directly supervised by our NP team.

Frequently Asked Questions — PRF Microneedling in Summer
Is PRF microneedling safe for darker skin tones in summer?
Yes, with proper precautions. PRF significantly reduces post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation risk by accelerating healing and reducing inflammation. We take additional care with deeper skin tones — pre-treating with appropriate skincare and post-care protocols as needed. Your provider will assess your skin at consultation.
How soon after treatment can I be in the sun?
We recommend avoiding direct sun exposure for 48 hours after your session. After that, daily mineral SPF is non-negotiable throughout the summer — and frankly, year-round.
Can I combine PRF microneedling with other summer treatments?
Yes. Many clients combine PRF with our SkinBetter Science skincare routine at home, or time their session before a Glutathione IV infusion (for added antioxidant support). Spacing matters — your provider will guide you on timing.
What's the difference between PRF and PRP microneedling?
PRF is the next generation of PRP. It has a higher concentration of growth factors, releases them more slowly (sustained healing over time), and does not require anticoagulants — making it more biocompatible and effective. All microneedling at JLoo is PRF, not standard PRP.
Is there downtime?
Most clients experience 24–48 hours of redness and mild sensitivity — similar to a moderate sunburn. Many return to work the same day or the next morning. Full healing and glow typically set in by day 3–5.
